Flinders and his crew mapped the Australian coastline, studying plants and animals along the way. The voyage of the HMS Investigator from 1801 – 1803, shed new light on the natural history of Australia. Aboard the Investigator was Ferdinand Bauer (1760-1826) who was appointed natural history artist for the voyage. Franz and Ferdinand Bauer achieved great acclaim and contributed immensely to the study, record and understanding of botany and nature. Stunningly precise works that were almost photo realistic in their accuracy were their hallmark. This range of mechanical timepieces created in tribute is no less stunning and intricate in their detail and workmanship. A fluid round case with an exhibition caseback has but slimmest frame to mark out the minutes exposing the full glory of the complex and beautifully machined individual parts that create this stunning timepiece from Earnshaw. Beautifully honest in its representation of the mechanics of time – this is truly the timepiece for the connoisseur of horology. The watch is strapped with a genuine leather strap tanned in Italy and offers a luxurious accompaniment to an already outstanding timepiece.

ES-8049-02 (Gold and Brown)

I absolutely love this watch, I certainly recommend the gold and brown version. I was also very tempted with the emerald green strap too. I’ll give a totally honest review here of the ups and downs of it. So aesthetically, it’s beautiful, the skeleton style really makes this watch stand out, and I’ve had so many people comment on it. I initially didn’t like the Thomas Earnshaw logo on the face of the watch but I actually now think without it would seem like a knock-off brand or something, I think they have etched it onto the sapphire glass really well on the underside too in gold. I’ve had this watch for a few years now and the mechanism is still working perfectly, just be careful not to overwind it once the spring is fully compact, as I imagine it may break it.. The quality of the leather strap and the colour isn’t given justice by the photos on the website, it is actually a lighter milk chocolate brown and real leather, which really goes well with the gold casing. The strap over time has weathered ever so slightly as you’d expect with leather but actually makes it look more vintage. After time as well the strap has started to smell and is difficult to remove even after washing, but this is an issue with most leather straps unfortunately and can be swapped out. I have found a temp fix which is to use a certain brand of roll-on deodorant on my wrist. The one thing I wish the watch designers did do, is change the minute rim just inside the circumference of the casing to a metal one, and have the circles representing the minutes etched into the metal to match the casing. It’s the only thing that slightly bugs me about the watch, the one currently being used is this silver plastic looking rim, and it just cheapens the look slightly, but this is just me being picky. The price was excellent as I got this on (I believe) a Black Friday deal, but even the standard price is totally worth it. In honesty, if you’re into watches, you realise that watch price tags are typically forgiven when they fit the the look, style, brand, and quality. Part of buying a watch is showing your wealth and the watch value/desire. It’s like diamonds and gold, who’s got the best/most expensive. So I think price is merely a parameter that a customer needs to reach, not the watch itself. It was so close to a five star rating but only knocked to a four because of the details mentioned.
